Introduce families to healthy foods

Over half of New Yorkers are overweight or obese and in lower-income neighborhoods in NYC, the picture of overweight and obesity looks much grimmer than in the City overall and when looking at national trends. There are many efforts underway to slow or reverse this worsening trend, but much more needs to be done. Many low-income neighborhoods are healthy food deserts with a limited supply of fresh fruits and vegetables and where they exist, the quality is poor or the prices are high.

The NYC Health Department's Health Bucks Program introduces New Yorkers to farmer's markets as a source of healthy food by subsidizing the cost of fruits and vegetables. NYC farmers markets provide an opportunity for residents to buy fresh and affordable produce while supporting regional farmers. Health Bucks are developed and distributed by the NYC Health Department and can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets. Market locations are listed on each Health Buck to guide new visitors to the most convenient market.

At some farmer's markets the Health Department also conducts nutrition education programs to teach visitors about the benefits of eating fresh, local fruits and vegetables and how to create tasty, healthy meals using the produce being sold at the market. Help us encourage healthy eating by providing an introduction to a farmer's market for a family living in the areas of the City with the least fruit and vegetable consumption and the least access to healthy foods. With your gift we can introduce New Yorkers in lower income neighborhoods to healthy food, teach them how to prepare healthy meals, and support our local farms.
