Faith-Based "Health Ministries"

Grant funding through FPHNY is supporting ten faith-based organizations in Brooklyn that are working to train congregant health volunteer "Health Ministers" in the promotion of health and wellness activities within these institutions. Health Ministers have been trained to promote important public health measures such as cancer screening, monitoring diabetes, maintaining heart health, and others. Health Ministers raise awareness about the importance of timely health screenings and appropriate health behaviors as well as motivate, refer and counsel their members on how and when to seek health services where appropriate. The program will evaluate the impact of a healthy ministry model on the health awareness of congregations. The program is working with representatives from seven Christian churches, two Islamic mosques, and one Jewish synagogue.
