Access to Low Cost Medications

Efforts to develop a sustainable mechanism for increasing access to low cost medicines for nearly three million uninsured and underinsured New Yorkers are underway. Private and public grants through the Fund for Public Health in New York (FPHNY) have supported the launch of “NYCRx, Inc.”, an organization dedicated to helping New York City’s safety net providers distribute medicines to outpatients at lower cost, increase patient adherence to medication, and expand chronic care management for uninsured and underinsured patients. Support for this effort comes, in part, from the New York State Health Foundation.

The program has developed the necessary infrastructure to support eligible health centers and hospitals in implementing the Federal 340B drug discount program to increase patients’ access to low cost pharmaceuticals.

Why improving access to medications is a priority:
Over 900,000 New Yorkers failed to fill a prescription due to cost in 2003
The average cost of filling a prescription in NYC is $63, one of the highest in the nation, creating a major barrier to obtaining needed treatment
In 2003, at least 782,000 NYC adults had no medical plan, hospitalization coverage, or prescription benefits
