Surge Capacity: A Key Element in Preparedness

Surge capacity in NYC hospitals is a prime objective of NYC’s Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Program. Hospital preparedness for health emergencies that may affect large sectors of the population at one time rests on a number of factors: planning, training, equipment, management and coordination, and surge capacity. Hospital surge capacity is the ability of a hospital to quickly accommodate a sharp increase in demand for health care resources. A key measure or marker of a hospital’s readiness to handle an emergency is its ability to scale up and treat a high volume of victims quickly. Without surge capacity, a hospital’s facilities, systems and staff may quickly be overcome by the sudden increase in people needing or seeking care. The NYC Healthcare Emergency Preparedness Program is supporting the development and enhancement of surge capacity in nearly all acute care centers in New York City.
